About

The Corio Hotel in Goolwa

Built in 1858 and named after the paddlesteamer 'Corio" which sank in the Murray River in 1857. The now National Trust listed hotel has continued to operate ever since and has maintained its comfortable, historical atmosphere. Aninteresting feature of the hotel is the Great Yankee Doodle Tobacco ceiling posters. The posters are reproductions of a painting call The Spirit of 76 by Archiblad M Willard. The original painting, titled Yankee Doodle , was a humorous depiction of the Fourth of July celebrations, but was changed from humorous to patriotic for the Centennial Exposition of 1876 in Philadelphia USA. Coloured reproductions, like the ones on the ceiling of the Corio, were sold prior to the centennial under thier new title "The Spirit of 76"

The Hotel features Bars a  Restaurant, Gaming, Bottle Shop TAB and Keno facilities.
